The latin occupation

The Latin, i.e. western occupation of Constantinople was established after ruthlessly conquering and sacking the City by the joined Western allies in 1204.

Ironically, that was the 4th Crusade, organised in the name of Christianity and to liberate the occupied Holy Land by the Muslim forces. The venture was helped financially by the Venice which wanted to gain more power at the expence of Byzantium..
