Beginning with Ivan the Terrible and ending with the Russian Revolution of 1917, the tsars and emperors of Russia wielded absolute power. The monarchy ended in Russia when Nicholas II was deposed.

Russian tzars (caesars) were direct ancestors of Byzantine Imperial family and thus were ancestors of the Byzantine Throne by blood and origin.
